"Somporn" reveals new goals for Thai women's volleyball after qualifying for the Olympics for the first time, aiming for the 2026 Asian Championship title.
On 1 September 2026, Mr. Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Volleyball Association of Thailand, announced the next goals for the Thai women's national volleyball team after bringing joy to the nation by winning the 2026 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship and securing their first-ever Olympic qualification for the 2028 Games.
Last night (31 August 2026), the Thai women's volleyball team returned to Suvarnabhumi Airport from Tianjin, People's Republic of China, bringing home their 4th Asian Championship title, a ticket to the 2028 Olympic Games in the United States, and qualification for the 2027 Women's Volleyball World Championship to be held in the U.S. and Canada. They were warmly welcomed by many Thai volleyball fans.
Mr. Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Volleyball Association of Thailand, expressed gratitude to everyone involved for supporting the women's national volleyball team to achieve success. He said the team will continue working to become even stronger.
The next target is the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. The team will keep this squad but must reduce the roster from 14 to 12 players according to Asian Games regulations. The Thai athletes are eager to win the gold medal.
"We hope to win the Asian Games gold medal. We've never won gold before, only silver. We will try our best to reach the gold medal. Regardless, we aim to secure some medal and continue to fulfill our dreams as we did in the Asian Championship."
The Thai women's volleyball team will compete in the 2026 Asian Games from 16 September to 3 October 2026 in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. They are in Group C with Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, and Chinese Taipei.
The best performance of the Thai women's volleyball team at the Asian Games was winning the silver medal in 2018 in Indonesia and two bronze medals in 2014 in South Korea and 2022 in China.
The Thai women's volleyball team is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul at the Government House on 3 September before departing for training camp in Japan to prepare for the 2026 Asian Games.
