Malaysia Approves 473 Gold Medals Across 43 Sports for 2027 SEA Games

Malaysia has confirmed the 2027 SEA Games will feature 473 gold medals contested across 43 sports, including five sports added after successful appeals, among them padel, which is set to debut at the Games.

The SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Executive Committee officially finalized the program for the 34th SEA Games in Malaysia in 2027, confirming 43 sports and 473 medal events. Five sports were added following appeals, including padel, which will be introduced for the first time. Competitions will be held across four major cities from 18 to 29 September next year.

At the SEAGF Executive Committee Meeting No. 3 for 2025–2027, held online and chaired by Dr. Nur Azmi Ahmad, Vice President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and SEAGF Executive Committee Chair, along with Maj Gen Ekachai Phakdiwat, Vice President of the Olympic Committee of Thailand and SEAGF CEO, and representatives from the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of all 11 member countries, the final competition program for the 34th SEA Games in Malaysia in 2027 was unanimously approved.

The approved schedule includes a total of 473 events across 43 sports, the result of thorough discussions among the National Olympic Committee of Malaysia, the Malaysian SEA Games Organizing Committee (MASOC), and SEAGF, in accordance with the federation's constitution and regulations.

Dr. Nur Azmi Ahmad stated after the meeting that finalizing the competition events allows all member countries' Olympic committees to plan and prepare more clearly. Among the 43 sports, five were approved after appeals: padel, dancesport, teqball, ice hockey, and kabaddi.

Datuk Abdul Rashid Yaakub, MASOC CEO, confirmed the event clusters will be spread across four main cities: Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Penang, and Johor. Padel, making its regional multi-sport debut with six countries confirmed to participate, will be held in Kuala Lumpur, while dancesport competitions will take place in Sarawak.

Additionally, the meeting marked a significant step as SEAGF signed an application to become a signatory member of the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC). The signing was attended by Maj Gen Ekachai Phakdiwat and Mr. Mohammad Nasir Ali, Secretary General of the Malaysian NOC, aiming to raise doping control standards to international levels. The 34th SEA Games are scheduled for 18 to 29 September 2027 in Malaysia.
