
Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai staged a thrilling comeback to defeat a Japanese pair 2-1 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open 2025.
The Petronas Malaysia Open 2026, a World Tour Super 1000 badminton event held in Malaysia on 8 January, featured the mixed doubles second round match where Bas (Dechapol Puavaranukroh) and Fem (Sapsiree Taerattanachai), the defending champions and world No. 3 mixed doubles pair as well as third seeds, faced the new Japanese duo Akira Koga and Natsu Saito.
Bas and Fem, after losing the first game, turned the match around by winning the next two games. In the deciding game, they trailed significantly at 8-1 and 10-4 but fought back to close the first half down 8-11. They then made a late-game surge to narrowly win 2-1 with scores of 16-21, 21-8, 21-19, in a match lasting 1 hour and 7 minutes.
This victory advanced Bas and Fem to the quarterfinals where they will meet the winner between Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund, the world No. 11 pair from Denmark, and Julien Mayo-Lea Palermo, world No. 44 from France.
In the women's doubles second round, Muk Ornicha Jongsathapornpan and Anfield Sukrit Suwachai, ranked No. 47 in the world, were defeated 0-2 by South Korea's Jung Na Eun and Lee Yeon Woo, ranked No. 19, with scores of 14-21, 13-21.
