Introducing the ASEAN volleyball queens! Thailand has claimed the title 17 times, the Philippines were former ASEAN champions, and Vietnam has suffered the most by reaching the finals but never winning gold.
On 15 December 2025 GMT+7, the women's volleyball competition at the Southeast Asian regional sports event concluded once again with the 2025 gold medal match set between host Thailand and Vietnam. This marked their fourth consecutive meeting in the final, following 2019, 2021, and 2023.
However, the outcome remained the same in the previous three meetings, with Thailand winning gold each time, reinforcing their dominance as the true powerhouse of women's volleyball in ASEAN.
Looking back at the history since the women's volleyball competition began in 1977, Thailand has been the most successful nation, earning 17 gold medals, 2 silver, and 2 bronze, firmly establishing themselves as the top gold medal holder by a wide margin.
Next is the Philippines, who were dominant in the pioneering era with 6 gold medals, followed by Indonesia, who has 1 gold but frequently stood on the podium with 7 silver and 10 bronze medals.
In contrast, Vietnam is the most unfortunate nation in the tournament's history, having reached the finals 12 times but never capturing a gold medal.
The ASEAN women's volleyball championship was initially monopolized by the Philippines before Thailand rose to prominence in the late 1980s. Since 1995, Thailand has created a legendary run with 15 consecutive titles up to 2025, when they dramatically defeated Vietnam 3-2 (19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23). The decisive set extended to 25 points, but ultimately the Thai women's volleyball team successfully defended their championship.
