At 16:00 on 20 Jan 2026 GMT+7, reporters learned that officers at Mae Sot Police Station, Mae Sot District, Tak Province, received a report that Police Corporal Sek San Kangka, patrol squad leader and head of booth 405—also known as the community service booth at Ban Mae Kunoi, Mae Ku Subdistrict—was shot in the abdomen, the bullet passing through to his back, sustaining serious injuries. The shooting occurred in front of a convenience store near the Mae Ku village intersection on the Asian Highway between Mae Sot and Phop Phra Districts. Authorities informed superiors and rushed to the scene.
At the scene, Police Corporal Sek San was found seriously injured and was urgently transported to Mae Sot Hospital. En route, the hospital requested blood donations due to heavy blood loss. Police used radio communication to call all Mae Sot Police Station officers to donate blood to assist the injured officer.
Investigations by the officers at the scene revealed that before the incident, Second Lieutenant Sek San had received a tip that Myanmar nationals intended to sell firearms. He planned a sting operation at the convenience store. Dressed in plain clothes, three officers arrived beforehand in a white pickup truck. Soon after, two Myanmar men arrived on a motorcycle with one riding pillion and met with the plainclothes officers waiting. The suspects produced firearms intending to sell them, but the police revealed their identities to arrest them. One Myanmar male resisted, leading to a struggle in front of vendors beside the convenience store, during which a bullet struck a white sedan belonging to a vendor.
Subsequently, one suspect wearing a black hooded jacket and dark jeans drew a 9mm handgun and immediately fired at the officers before fleeing. The other suspect was apprehended by authorities. The motorcycle used in the incident was abandoned at the scene.
Most recently, Police Colonel Sathaphon Rodphotong, Deputy Commander of Tak Provincial Police, ordered Police Colonel Rang Dawdueng, Chief of Mae Sot Police Station, and officers to pursue the fleeing suspect. They were instructed to exercise caution as the suspect remains armed. There have been no further updates on the suspect's capture.
Meanwhile, the Mae Sot Police Station Facebook page posted an update stating: “Mae Sot Unit 1 has established a pursuit team! The suspect shot a police officer. Coordination with military, local administration, and related agencies is ongoing. One of two suspects has been arrested. Police are intensifying efforts to locate and arrest the other. Commanders at all levels are personally overseeing the operation.
