Social media erupted with criticism over a photo showing police officers lining up to receive "Ang Pao" envelopes. The Metropolitan Police Command investigated and stated that the distributing company acted according to traditional customs without any hidden intentions, and the quantity did not exceed legal limits.
On 17 Feb 2026 GMT+7, following the circulation of a photo online showing police officers queuing at a traditional herbal medicine company during the daytime on 16 Feb, many speculated whether they were waiting to receive Ang Pao envelopes.
Subsequently, the Metropolitan Police Command investigated the matter and clarified that the incident did occur at the stated date, time, and location. Representatives of the company explained that distributing the Ang Pao envelopes was part of customary celebrations for the Chinese New Year festival, and the company had publicly invited anyone to come and receive them at designated points.
There was no specific targeting of any individual, including police officers and officials from various agencies, who were able to receive envelopes just like other members of the public. This was done to bring good fortune, luck, and morale for their duties, with no hidden motives or expectations of gain. It was purely a traditional offering. Moreover, the value of the gifts given did not exceed legal limits.
The Metropolitan Police Command has increased strict measures for prevention, suppression, and monitoring during the Chinese New Year period. They urged the public to trust in security efforts, emphasized appropriate dress and conduct, and strictly prohibited any solicitation or acceptance of improper benefits.
