A tense incident at Chana Songkhram Police Station where a police sergeant shot himself inside the station. The Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Division 1 revealed the officer had been suffering from depression and under treatment for over two years. He also confirmed that rumors of "police shooting each other" are not true.
At around 1:00 PM on 2 March 2026, Chana Songkhram Police Station received a report of a police officer harming himself by shooting inside the station.
At the scene, emergency medical personnel and Poh Teck Tung Foundation staff, along with investigators, assisted the victim inside the second-floor restroom of the station. The injured was identified as Police Sergeant Major Rachat Thiamthan, Investigation Unit Chief at Chana Songkhram Police Station, who shot himself once in the right side of the head with a 9mm handgun and was found barely breathing at the scene.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Naphasin Piyarath, an investigator at Chana Songkhram Police Station who aided the victim, said that at 1:05 PM a janitor ran in reporting gunshots and seeing an officer lying in a pool of blood inside the restroom. He and volunteer rescue workers, who had arrived earlier with a traffic accident victim, went to check. The restroom door was locked from the inside, so rescuers climbed in and opened the door to extract the injured officer. They performed CPR alternating with him for nearly an hour since the officer was still breathing but unresponsive, before calling emergency medical teams to transport him to Thonburi Bamrungmuang Hospital.
Police Colonel Kampol Rattanaprateep, Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Division 1, stated that the officer had been diagnosed with depression and treated for over two years. Previously assigned to investigative duties, he was transferred to administrative work, but due to his condition, the police requested his supervisor to move him to patrol duties within the station. On this day, he had asked his supervisor to join colleagues on duty and returned to the station around noon, when the incident occurred.
He confirmed that the rumors of "police officers shooting each other" are false, likely arising from misunderstandings by nearby residents who heard gunshots and the sounds of rescue efforts following the shooting.
