Final Straw: 71-Year-Old Man Fatally Strikes 63-Year-Old Neighbor with Hoe After 2 Years of Being Called Poor

The village headman revealed that the reason a 71-year-old man used a hoe to strike his 63-year-old neighbor on the head, causing death on a road in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, was due to being insulted as "poor family" for over two years.

On 8 Mar 2026, the case involved Mr. Prayoon, 63, who lived in Ban Saraphi, Si Liam Subdistrict, Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province. He was struck multiple times on the head with a hoe by Mr. Liap, 71, who lived directly across the street. The attack occurred around 18:00 on 7 Mar and resulted in Mr. Prayoon's death on the roadside inside the village.

This incident is troubling for society since both men were elderly neighbors. Social media has raised questions about how to resolve such recurring conflicts commonly seen in Thai communities.

Recently, Mr. Wichian Phutthachart, 57, village headman of Village No. 6, Si Liam Subdistrict, stated that the two had been in conflict for over two years. Mostly, the deceased was the aggressor, frequently insulting the perpetrator verbally whenever intoxicated.

There had been several complaints from the perpetrator before. The headman tried to mediate and asked the deceased to stop using disturbing language, especially defamatory terms like "poor" or "poor family." However, the deceased never heeded these requests and repeatedly shouted the same insults while drunk.

Similarly, this time Mr. Prayoon was drunk and shouted insults again. The perpetrator, reportedly extremely angry, approached to confront him but was attacked with a hoe by the deceased. A struggle over the hoe ensued, during which the sober perpetrator gained the upper hand and struck with the hoe, resulting in the fatality.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s 26-year-old niece admitted that her uncle often shouted insults at Mr. Liap when drunk, sometimes including disrespectful remarks about family. However, she felt that Mr. Liap’s actions were excessively violent, as they led to her uncle’s death.
