The Corrections Department denied reports that Ekachai Hongkangwan is seriously ill in prison. He has a medical history of liver abscess and enlarged prostate. Currently, he experiences chest tightness but lives normally, is given medication, and is under symptom observation.
On 9 Mar, the Corrections Department issued a statement responding to news reports that Ekachai Hongkangwan, currently held at Klong Prem Central Prison during appeal proceedings for charges of attempting to harm the Queen's freedom, was seriously ill in prison.
The Corrections Department stated that on 9 Mar 2026 at 10:30 a.m., it assigned the Medical Services Division to check on Ekachai Hongkangwan's illness. Medical staff spoke with Ekachai and found he has liver abscess and enlarged prostate. He previously received treatment for liver abscess at Rajavithi Hospital but, after release, did not continue treatment because he declined hospital visits under his rights. Therefore, there is no continuous treatment record. The medical staff advised and monitored his liver abscess and prostate symptoms.
Currently, Ekachai only has chest tightness on the right side and can perform daily activities in prison normally and independently. For his enlarged prostate, Klong Prem Central Prison nurses have dispensed prescribed medication according to the treatment plan. The doctor scheduled a follow-up examination on 11 Mar. If symptoms do not improve after medication, the doctor will diagnose and plan further treatment.
The medical facility at Klong Prem Central Prison and the Medical Services Division have already explained the situation to Ekachai and will coordinate with the Corrections Hospital to plan close treatment. Regarding reports of Ekachai being seriously ill, this concern was raised by a nurse friend who visited him and advised he see a doctor for examination and treatment.
The Corrections Department ensures the welfare of prisoners in prisons and correctional institutions according to their basic rights, without neglect, especially access to medical care based on human rights principles and equality. Furthermore, the department reported from Thonburi Special Prison that the monkeypox outbreak has ended, and prisoners are living normally with family visitation services resumed. This is to inform the public accordingly.
