Mother Weeps Holding Photo of Nong Praew in Soul-Removal Ceremony Before Cremation

The family of "Nong Praew" invited monks to conduct a soul-removal chanting ceremony. The mother held a photo, weeping, and the body was taken from the hospital for cremation. The father firmly refused funeral cost assistance after the "Pond" family offered 30,000 baht.

At 09:30 on 11 Mar 2026 GMT+7, reporters reported that the parents of "Nong Praew," a 22-year-old waitress, who was strangled to death by her brutal brother-in-law, Mr. Phanuwat Rintawut, or "Pond," aged 31, in an attempted rape, brought food and drinks and invited four monks to perform a soul-removal chanting ceremony in the bedroom where the crime occurred at their home in a longan orchard, Nam Phrae Subdistrict, Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai Province. This was done according to their belief to invite her spirit back to her hometown in Wiang Haeng District.

The atmosphere of the ceremony was sorrowful. Nong Praew's mother held her youngest son and the photo of Nong Praew, weeping continuously, and spoke in the Lisu language, saying, "Please let her return to our home," a heart-wrenching moment for those present.

After the spirit-inviting ceremony, Nong Praew's family and about 50 villagers from Laowu traveled to Hang Dong Police Station to present a gift basket as thanks to Police Colonel Jakriyut Chotivachirapong, the chief of Hang Dong Police Station, and the investigation team for their swift work that led to the suspect's arrest.

Nong Praew's father said that after the incident, the suspect "Pond"'s family called to offer 30,000 baht to help with funeral expenses but never came to meet them. He said that amount cannot compare to the life of his daughter, who was the family's pillar, working to support her parents and her younger brother's education. If she were alive, she could have earned more. Therefore, he refused the money and insisted that the police carry the case to the fullest extent, seeking the maximum penalty—execution. He also expressed a wish that such incidents never happen again and urged law enforcers to impose severe penalties on offenders of this nature.

In the afternoon at 13:00 on the same day, the family went to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital to receive Nong Praew's body before taking it for cremation at Sri Bunruang Temple, Pa Phai Subdistrict, San Sai District, Chiang Mai Province.

On Thursday, 12 Mar 2026 GMT+7, at 08:00, the family collected Nong Praew's ashes to perform merit-making rituals according to the Lisu tribe's beliefs and to bury them in Laowu Village, Mueang Haeng Subdistrict, Wiang Haeng District, Chiang Mai Province.
