Sorapong Meets Police to Acknowledge Charges in Bribery Case Involving Big Joke

Sorapong Wongsuwan appeared before the Anti-Corruption Police (ACP) following a summons to acknowledge charges related to a bribery case involving 'Big Joke.' He was unaware of an outstanding arrest warrant before being granted bail set at 105,000 baht.

The case involves the delivery of gold bars weighing a total of 246 baht, currently valued at about 15 million baht, given to Mr. Ekwit, a member of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), as a bribe to influence proceedings in a case concerning Police General Surachate Hakparn, who is under investigation related to an online gambling website in 2024.

Reporters stated that at 8:00 p.m. on 18 Mar 2024 GMT+7, at Division 1, the Anti-Corruption and Misconduct Suppression Division (ACMSD), Sorapong Wongsuwan, who purchased the gold for the client, met with investigators per a summons to acknowledge charges in the original case. Sorapong was unaware he had been summoned twice, prompting investigators to request an arrest warrant. After interrogation and notification of charges, he was allowed bail during the investigation stage.

Meanwhile, Police Major General Prasong Chalermpun, Commander of the ACMSD, said Sorapong came to the ACMSD per the summons regarding bribery involving a NACC member linked to a former senior police officer. Upon arrival, investigators discovered an outstanding arrest warrant for Sorapong on charges of jointly bribing officials issued by the Anti-Corruption Court. He was informed of the charges and granted bail set at 105,000 baht. Further investigation and prosecution will continue.
