Strict Enforcement on Day 6 of Songkran: Drunk Driving Cases Surge with Chiang Mai Leading

The Department of Probation revealed statistics for Day 6 of strict Songkran enforcement, reporting a surge in drunk driving cases, with Chiang Mai topping the list, followed by Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi.

On 16 Apr 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Piya Raksakul, Director-General of the Department of Probation, disclosed monitoring results during the 2026 Songkran festival. On 15 Apr, the sixth day of intensified control measures, 1,271 cases entered the probation process: 1,219 (95.9%) were drunk driving cases, 51 (4.0%) involved driving under influence of drugs, and 1 case (0.1%) involved reckless driving.


The cumulative total over six days from 10 to 15 Apr reached 5,232 cases, broken down into 4,945 drunk driving cases (94.51%), 4 reckless driving cases (0.08%), 281 drug-influenced driving cases (5.37%), and 2 speeding cases (0.04%).

The top three provinces with the highest drunk driving cases are: 1. Chiang Mai with 680 cases, 2. Samut Prakan with 433 cases, and 3. Nonthaburi with 335 cases.


:“Drive safely, reduce speed, reduce accidents.”Speeding and drunk driving are major causes of accidents. The Department of Probation has coordinated with all agencies to support safe travel back to Bangkok and is strictly enforcing the law.“Drunk driving, strict enforcement.”Offenders are brought into the probation process alongside intensified “community checkpoints” and “public service points” to deter and warn risky drivers. The Department has instructed probation offices nationwide to proactively screen probationers with alcohol problems systematically for rehabilitation and referral for treatment, following established protocols. Behavioral modification activities are also organized for offenders driving under the influence during the post-Songkran period of 2026.

Additionally, collaboration with network partners involves probationers performing community service to support operations at nine public service points, with 158 participants. A traffic law and alcohol hazard training session was held once, attended by 42 participants, aiming to raise awareness and offer offenders opportunities to change behavior and contribute to sustainable community safety.
