Captain Wirot Detained at Narathiwat Prison, Consults Lawyers for Sentence Reduction

The Narathiwat Provincial Police Chief announced that Captain Wirot, the last suspect and gunman involved in the gang that shot MP Kamolsak, has been remanded to Narathiwat Provincial Prison. He has been consulting with his legal team to find ways to reduce his sentence.

On 25 April 2026, Pol. Maj. Gen. Prayong Khotsakha, Commander of the Narathiwat Provincial Police, provided an update on the attempted shooting case of MP Kamolsak, a Narathiwat MP from the Prachachat Party. He stated that authorities have successfully obtained a court order from the Narathiwat Provincial Court to detain Captain Wirot Ketumanee, the latest suspect.

The process involving both the police and the court proceeded smoothly. Currently, the suspect is held at Narathiwat Provincial Prison alongside four other suspects previously arrested: Somporn Langdet, a former marine who coordinated and planned; Alawi Awe, the driver; Suntorn Promphakdee, owner of the garage where the getaway car was dismantled; and Thanapat Watthanaphinyo, a former ranger who acted as a gunman.

The Narathiwat Provincial Police Chief stated that all suspects face five charges: conspiracy to commit attempted murder; illegal possession of firearms and ammunition; carrying weapons in public without permission; discharging firearms in urban areas without just cause; and premeditated use of firearms in attempted murder. No additional charges have been filed yet. Authorities will continue investigations and interrogate the suspects inside Narathiwat Prison.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Prayong said that Captain Wirot Ketumanee has been consulting with his legal team to explore options for reducing his sentence.

Regarding developments in the case, the Internal Security Operations Command of Narathiwat Province assigned officers to file a complaint with investigators at Muang Narathiwat Police Station to pursue charges against Commander Montri Toprasert for alleged offenses under Sections 151 and 157 of the Criminal Code, involving abuse of power through corruption and misconduct in office.

Recently, authorities forwarded the matter to the Narathiwat office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The case remains under NACC review, and no police officers have yet been appointed to assist in the investigation.

A source from Narathiwat Prison revealed that the four detainees have begun to adapt and adjust to prison life, though some remain somewhat anxious. Prison officials are closely monitoring them to prevent any unexpected actions that could endanger their lives.

Investigators are pursuing additional leads based on statements from all five suspects. They have identified key aspects related to the incident, including possible contract killing arrangements. Ongoing inquiries focus on financial transactions, bank accounts, meetings between suspects and others, their travel, and mobile phone communications. MP Kamolsak, the victim, has appointed lawyers who have formally requested thorough investigations into these details, believing they may lead to uncovering those who orchestrated the suspects' actions.
