Investigation Accelerates in Chinese Mans Case Police Keep All Angles Open, Including Terrorism or Mental Illness

Pol. Maj. Gen. Phongphan Wongmaneethes, Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police, convened a meeting with the investigative team to further probe the case of a Chinese man found with an arsenal including C4 explosives. He affirmed that police have not ruled out any possibilities, including suspicions of terrorism, sabotage, or merely depression.

Updates on the case: Police arrested Ming Chen Sun, 31, a Chinese national, and Ms. A, Yu-Hsin, 33, a Taiwanese national, following a car rollover accident in the Najomtien Police jurisdiction. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers found firearms with magazines, prompting a search of their residence in Huay Yai alley. There, military-grade firearms, high-explosive devices, anti-personnel bombs, and ten explosives in total were discovered, along with bomb-making materials and large quantities of fuel. These were seized as evidence, and the suspects were detained for prosecution under the law.

At 16:30 on 10 May 2026, at the Najomtien Police meeting room, Pol. Maj. Gen. Phongphan Wongmaneethes held a briefing with the investigative team to review progress. Before the meeting started, he provided additional information to reporters.

Regarding the arrest of the Chinese suspect for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosives, police have continued their investigation and successfully traced connections to individuals involved in possessing and supplying firearms to the suspect, including those receiving payments and arms suppliers.

Regarding the explosives, authorities are gathering technical evidence and following leads to identify other involved parties. For any links found with government officials, information has been forwarded to the responsible agencies to proceed with relevant legal measures to determine how the suspect acquired the weapons.

Furthermore, the police chief has instructed investigators to expedite the collection of all evidence—witnesses, documents, physical items, forensic data, and digital information—to thoroughly verify facts and examine the suspect’s behavior. The probe will also extend to connected networks and the origins of weapons and dangerous materials, including suspicions of sabotage or espionage activity. Police will urgently pursue all involved for prosecution, firmly stating that no leads are being dismissed, including whether the suspect planned terrorism, sabotage, or if the actions stem from depression.
Regarding reports about the suspect’s mental health, the police chief has ordered a detailed psychiatric evaluation by specialists and psychologists to ensure procedures comply with legal and medical standards. Nevertheless, given the possession of numerous military-grade weapons, explosives, and hazardous devices that threaten public safety and national security, any mental health condition will not excuse the offenses. The Royal Thai Police will continue rigorous investigations and law enforcement, assuring the public of full commitment to safety and police duties.

Meanwhile, Pol. Maj. Gen. Thitawat Suriyachai, Deputy Commander of Provincial Police Region 2, stated that the origins of the firearms and explosives are not yet disclosed, pending conclusive evidence. If verified, the information will be made public as concealment is not possible. He also said police remain skeptical of the suspect’s statements, emphasizing the seriousness of the case requiring comprehensive investigation. The public is encouraged to confidentially provide any tips.

Regarding nationality, the suspect holds dual citizenship of China and the Dominican Republic, a common practice among Chinese nationals to evade detection. The so-called "pink card" for foreigners is a standard identification signed off in batches, with no special circumstances. Online rumors circulating about this are fake news.
