The husband confessed, insisting the deceased was not a mistress but his current girlfriend of one year. He admitted to strong jealousy after seeing distressing photos of her entering a hotel with a motorcycle taxi friend, which led to an argument and in a fit of rage, he assaulted her causing death.
Update on the case of Mr. Winai, 42, who assaulted Ms. Joy, 44, resulting in her death before driving a Toyota Altis registered in Bangkok to Bang Bua Thong Police Station to surrender to officers.
Recently, after police detained Mr. Winai to point out the crime scene inside a mansion and then brought him back to Bang Bua Thong Police Station, the news team tried to ask about the motive. Mr. Winai said the deceased was not a mistress but his current partner, with whom he had lived for about one year.
The woman who called the police and coordinated with rescue services was his ex-wife. After the incident, he phoned his ex-wife to ask for help.
Mr. Winai claimed that before the incident, he caught the deceased having an affair with a motorcycle taxi friend and personally saw them enter a hotel in the Bang Bua Thong area. This made him feel deeply hurt and very angry.
Upon returning to the room, he tried to question the woman, but she denied the allegations. This led to a violent argument, after which he lost control and assaulted her until she died. He insisted he did not use any weapons and did not intend to kill her.
Mr. Winai admitted feeling regret over what happened, caused by love and jealousy, and apologized for the incident before deciding to drive the deceased's body to surrender to the police himself.
Pol. Col. Chokchai Khana Charoen, Deputy Commander of Nonthaburi Provincial Police, revealed after personally interrogating the suspect that Mr. Winai confessed. He stated the case was straightforward as the suspect voluntarily surrendered.
Initially, Mr. Winai said he had been dating Ms. Joy for about a year before discovering she had a relationship with another man, a junior he knew. Mr. Winai had followed them to a short-stay hotel and witnessed their relationship firsthand.
After discovering this, both Mr. Winai and Ms. Joy returned to eat together as usual. At first, Mr. Winai thought he could forgive her. But after drinking alcohol and returning to the room, they discussed the matter again, leading to a verbal confrontation.
During the argument, Ms. Joy teased him about not having fully severed ties with his ex-wife. This angered Mr. Winai, who then lost control and assaulted Ms. Joy on the night of Tuesday, 12 May.
After the incident, Mr. Winai claimed they continued resting in the room as usual. Around 08:00 on 13 May, he went out to work as a driver, then returned around noon to find Ms. Joy dead. He then carried her body into his car and surrendered at Bang Bua Thong Police Station, having driven around all night in shock.
Later at about 08:00 today, after regaining composure, Mr. Winai called his ex-wife and confessed to murdering Ms. Joy. His ex-wife advised him to surrender to police at Bang Bua Thong Police Station.
Regarding the assault, Mr. Winai admitted slapping Ms. Joy's face about 3-4 times and kicking her. He insisted no weapons were used, but his large build caused the violence to be severe.
When asked if voluntarily surrendering would mitigate punishment, Pol. Col. Chokchai said this would require further consideration of evidence and details.
Police will summon related witnesses for further questioning, including the suspect's ex-wife, the deceased's relatives, and “Mr. Kob,” a motorcycle taxi friend alleged by the suspect to have a relationship with Ms. Joy.
The deputy commander also disclosed that the suspect has a prior criminal record but did not specify the case, respecting the suspect's rights and case confidentiality. Police are currently investigating any connections to drug-related matters.
This afternoon, police will take Mr. Winai to the Nonthaburi Provincial Court for detention following legal procedures.
