The Royal Thai Police have taken decisive criminal action against a gang involved in abducting five Chinese nationals, who have been detained, and have proposed temporarily suspending four police officers implicated in the case. The National Police Chief has ordered an expanded investigation into transnational crime networks.
On 20 May 2026, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan, Deputy Inspector General of the Royal Thai Police and spokesperson for the Royal Thai Police, updated on the arrest of four police officers and one civilian following an operation by immigration police and other units to rescue five Chinese nationals from a residence in Wang Mai subdistrict, Wang Sombun district, Sa Kaeo province on 17 May. National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanpetch emphasized a thorough legal investigation and strict disciplinary action against the four officers, describing their conduct as a serious violation of the law. The Royal Thai Police acted decisively without leniency and ordered an expanded probe into all related parties. The Sa Kaeo Provincial Police promptly pressed criminal charges and recommended immediate temporary suspension of the four offending officers.
For the criminal proceedings, Wang Sombun Police Station in Sa Kaeo province has firmly pressed charges against all five suspects, accusing them of the following offenses: "Conspiracy to unlawfully detain others, abuse of official power, extortion, and corruption in duty" against the four police officers, while the civilian was charged as an accomplice aiding officials in wrongdoing. All suspects were remanded in custody by the Sa Kaeo Provincial Court on 19 May, with Pol. Maj. Gen. Thaworn Dulyawit, Commander of Sa Kaeo Provincial Police, personally overseeing the investigation.
Regarding disciplinary action, the Royal Thai Police have instructed the officers’ units to proceed strictly. Initial reports indicate that the four accused officers have been recommended for "temporary suspension from service" to ensure a transparent investigation and to build public and stakeholder confidence. In addition, one more police officer suspected of involvement is currently being located for questioning and further investigation. Should involvement be confirmed, both criminal and disciplinary actions will be taken decisively and without exception.
The police spokesperson stated that such conduct is a serious violation of law, discipline, and ethics for police officers. Even if the detainees engaged in illegal activities, government officials have no right to exercise unlawful power. The Royal Thai Police have a clear policy to prevent and suppress all forms of crime and strictly remove any officers who break the law. The investigation will be expedited to identify all involved parties and check for organized crime or additional supporters. All units have been instructed to perform their duties strictly within the legal framework to maintain public trust and the country’s reputation.
Furthermore, preliminary investigations revealed that the five foreigners were illegal immigrants frequently crossing between Thailand and Cambodia. Authorities are also examining possible links to transnational crime networks or online scam operations.
The Royal Thai Police affirm that all police units and related agencies maintain strict security measures to facilitate all citizens and tourists regardless of nationality, assuring that Thailand remains safe. They emphasize that Thailand will not tolerate being a base or transit point for any form of transnational criminal networks.
