Former F1 Driver Mika Juhani Salo Assaulted with a Knife Bangkok Police Ordered to Launch Manhunt

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner has ordered all 88 Bangkok police stations to thoroughly investigate the scene after Mika Juhani Salo, a former Finnish Formula 1 driver, was slashed in the leg by an assailant while touring in Bangkok. Authorities have confirmed the incident took place within the jurisdiction of Lumpini Police Station.

On 26 May 2026, Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Metropolitan Police Commissioner, directed all investigative units across the 88 police stations under the Metropolitan Police Bureau to urgently follow leads, examine the crime scene, and trace the assailant’s escape route. This followed reports circulating online that Mika Juhani Salo, 60, a former Finnish F1 driver, was assaulted with a sharp object causing leg injuries.

Investigation revealed that Salo entered Thailand on 19 May 2026 via Suvarnabhumi Airport and was staying at a hotel in the Sukhumvit 2 area, Khlong Toei district, Bangkok.

Subsequently, Pol. Maj. Gen. Pallop Aermla, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, personally led investigators from the Metropolitan Police Division to follow up on the case. He instructed officials to review CCTV footage around the area and carefully track the suspect’s escape route. Coordination with the Finnish Embassy in Thailand is underway to obtain further information and assist the victim in filing a formal complaint.

Preliminary checks confirmed that the victim sustained leg wounds, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed. Meanwhile, Thonglor Police Station stated no reports or evidence indicate the incident occurred within their jurisdiction.

Investigators have now confirmed the incident took place in the Lumpini Police Station area. They are gathering additional evidence to apprehend the suspect and proceed with legal action.
