Relative of Prominent Politician Reports Assault by Cyber Police Ubon Ratchathani Police Chief Clarifies Officers Not from Local Unit

A relative of a prominent politician filed a complaint alleging assault by cyber police officers. The Chief of Ubon Ratchathani City Police clarified these officers are not from their unit and that formal communication has been initiated with the accused officers' commanding superiors. Preliminary findings suggest the cause was personal, following a confrontation that escalated.

On 29 May 2026, amid intense online criticism after a video went viral showing a group of men assaulting a man—garnering over one million views within a day—it was revealed the victim is Mr. Chetwit Narongdit, aged 39, a relative of a local politician in Ubon Ratchathani Province. He has since filed a formal complaint with Lt. Col. Phanupat Warasut, investigator at Ubon Ratchathani City Police Station, to press charges against all involved.

Mr. Chetwit, the victim, described the incident as occurring around 2 a.m. on 24 May 2026 in the restroom of an entertainment venue located in Nai Mueang subdistrict, Mueang District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. While preparing to leave, he unexpectedly encountered two men he recognized as local police officers. He was informed that both are currently assigned to the Cyber Police Division (บช.สอท.) in Ubon Ratchathani. Until then, he had no prior disputes or conflicts with these two officers.

He further recounted that the two officers, named “Khongbeng” and “Max,” confronted him as he exited the restroom. Officer Khongbeng grabbed him by the neck and demanded to know if he had any issues with his friend. Mr. Chetwit truthfully denied knowing or having any problems with them. This response angered Khongbeng, who then pushed him. At that moment, Officer Max took the opportunity to strike Mr. Chetwit from behind. Despite efforts to defend himself, he was overpowered as a group of friends of the two officers joined in to assault him, as seen in the viral video.

Mr. Chetwit emphasized that misunderstandings today should be resolved through dialogue or inquiry, not violence. Following the incident that evening, he reported it to Ubon Ratchathani City Police Station. When progress stalled, his elder brother posted the video evidence on social media to seek justice. The case then gained widespread attention, prompting investigators to urgently contact Mr. Chetwit for additional statements to pursue legal action.

Lt. Col. Saksri Krairach, Chief of Ubon Ratchathani City Police, provided an update stating that after the victim filed the complaint, around three to four suspects were identified, including two police officers who are not part of the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Police jurisdiction. Coordination with the accused officers’ parent unit is underway. The preliminary cause appears to be a personal matter triggered by a chance encounter that escalated, consistent with the video evidence.

Regarding concerns that the victim might face injustice or delays, Lt. Col. Saksri assured this is untrue. “Upon receiving the complaint, I immediately ordered the investigative team to identify the suspects. Although earlier the victim was unavailable to give testimony, he is scheduled to provide additional statements today,” he said.

He further emphasized to reassure the public: “I confirm that all actions will be based strictly on evidence with no favoritism. Wrongdoers will be held accountable. If ordinary citizens report crimes, police must follow the law, which has clearly defined timelines.”

He added that if the victim still feels uneasy or unfairly treated, he is welcome to contact him directly.

Additional reports indicate that after the video went viral, the police officers involved attempted to contact local elders to apologize and negotiate a settlement to end the matter. However, Mr. Chetwit firmly stated that the time for negotiation has passed and he intends to pursue the case fully to set a precedent.

He concluded by asserting that regardless of whether he is an ordinary citizen or a person of influence, police officers, as law enforcers, should not behave violently or abusively toward the public.
