Border Patrol Police Officer Opens Fire on Motorcycle Taxi Group in Huai Khwang, Killing 1 and Injuring 2 Over Fare Dispute

One dead and two injured in a gunfire incident in Huai Khwang. A Border Patrol Police officer shot at a motorcycle taxi group near the entrance of Prachasongkhro 38 Alley before surrendering, citing a dispute over fares.

At 02:50 on 14 June 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Phin Mekpaiboon, Investigator at Huai Khwang Police Station, received a report of a shooting with casualties, including fatalities and injuries. The incident occurred in front of the Kiattithongchai Market motorcycle taxi stand near the entrance of Prachasongkhro 38 Alley, Ratchadaphisek Subdistrict, Din Daeng District, Bangkok.

Authorities promptly arrived, including Police Colonel Ekaphop Tanprayoon, Deputy Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1; Police Colonel Sakya Sangwan, Deputy Commander of the same division; Police Colonel Sorsak Thongmee, Chief of Huai Khwang Police Station; Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanet Srichampa, Deputy Chief of the Investigation Division; Police Lieutenant Colonel Akkaraj Wanchaeng, Investigation Officer; patrol and investigation officers from Huai Khwang Police Station; forensic officers; a forensic pathologist from Ramathibodi Hospital; and volunteers from Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

At the scene in front of Kiattithongchai Market taxi stand on the sidewalk, the body of Mr. Purit Mangthisan, 37, was found. He was wearing a black short-sleeve T-shirt covered by an orange taxi vest number 12 and black long pants. He sustained three to four gunshot wounds from an unknown caliber firearm, entering the middle of his back and exiting through the chest. He lay on his back in a pool of blood. Two others were injured: Mr. Kiattisak Srirat, 46, was shot once in the thigh; and Mr. Charin Khunaruk, 48, was shot twice—once in the right thigh and once in the left hand. They were taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital and Phyathai Phahonyothin Hospital respectively.

Witnesses stated that while the deceased and his fellow motorcycle taxi drivers were resting as usual, the suspect suddenly approached and provoked a confrontation. The verbal dispute escalated into a physical altercation. During the chaos, the suspect drew a firearm and fired multiple shots into the motorcycle taxi group, resulting in one death and two injuries among the drivers.

The suspect is described as a young man wearing a long-sleeve black shirt, denim shorts, and carrying a black side bag. He fled the scene in an unknown direction.

Later, authorities were informed that the suspect had surrendered at Makkasan Police Station. He was identified as Police Senior Sergeant Major Namthap, 33, affiliated with the Border Patrol Police Bureau, and was in possession of a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol.. A magazine loaded with ammunition was also seized as evidence.

During questioning, the suspect stated the incident stemmed from a dispute over motorcycle taxi fares, which escalated into a fight. He admitted to firing his weapon at the motorcycle taxi group, causing the fatality and injuries. Afterward, he fled by taking a public car.

Initially, authorities have detained the suspect for further questioning to proceed with legal action.
