Electric Car Charging Sparks House Fire, Four Escape as Authorities Investigate Cause

A house fire in Mueang Khon Kaen District, Khon Kaen Province, completely destroyed the residence. The homeowner reported parking and charging an electric car around 5 a.m. when a loud bang was heard. The fire was found to have started from the charging vehicle. Authorities have initially coordinated with forensic police to collect evidence and investigate the cause of the fire.


At 5:00 a.m. on 16 June 2026, Police Lieutenant Watjra Ngamchuea, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, received a report via the Kaennakorn Radio Center about a fire at a house in Village 11, Mueang Kao Subdistrict, Mueang Khon Kaen District, Khon Kaen Province. He reported to his superiors and proceeded to the scene with Police Colonel Yoswat Kaewsuebtanich, Chief of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station.

Upon arrival, they found a two-story concrete house with a fire burning in the garage area. The fire was consuming a white electric car registered in Khon Kaen Province, which was completely damaged. Firefighters from Khon Kaen Municipality and Mueang Kao Municipality worked together to extinguish the fire on the electric car and the house. It took about one hour to control the blaze.


Police Colonel Yoswat Kaewsuebtanich, Chief of Mueang Khon Kaen Police Station, said after inspecting the scene that the house belonged to Mr. Setthaphat Kaewfainok, 46. Preliminary investigation revealed that the homeowner went out for errands and upon returning, parked the electric car inside the house and plugged it into a charging station outside. Around 5:00 a.m., a loud bang was heard, resembling a fire incident. Upon checking, the fire was found originating from the car connected to the charging station. Firefighters were notified to extinguish the flames.

The homeowner and three others living in the house escaped to safety amidst the intense flames.


After the fire was extinguished, it was found that nearly the entire house was destroyed, and the electric car was completely damaged. Investigators have coordinated with forensic police from Division 4 to examine and collect evidence to determine the cause of the fire. The extent of the damage is still under assessment.
