A military officer with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel assigned to the Muang Kalasin District Recruitment Office entered and shot the provincial recruitment officer dead inside his office at the provincial hall. The motive reportedly involved a dispute over a transfer order to another district. After the shooting, he surrendered; police are urgently investigating.
At 09:20 on 17 June 2026, reporters reported a serious incident inside the Kalasin Provincial Hall building. Several gunshots were heard on the fourth floor, where the Kalasin Provincial Recruitment Office is located, causing government officials, staff, and visitors to flee the building in panic.
Police from Muang Kalasin Police Station, accompanied by Suwan Khemthanphet, the Kalasin provincial governor; Phadungsak Im-erb, deputy governor; Police Major General Songphon Birbanprasit, provincial police commander; and Santi Chatupan, provincial secretary, along with rescue teams, quickly arrived at the scene. They found the body of Colonel Korawikanon, the 59-year-old provincial recruitment officer, lying dead inside his office.
Upon inspection, multiple gunshot wounds were found on the body. The suspect, Lieutenant Colonel Thinkorn, age 59, a recruitment officer at Muang Kalasin District, was standing at the scene surrendering to police with the firearm used in the shooting. Authorities immediately took him into custody for questioning at Muang Kalasin Police Station.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the violent incident stemmed from a dispute over work duties. Lieutenant Colonel Thinkorn was dissatisfied with an order transferring him to serve at the Kamalasai District Recruitment Office. He confronted Colonel Korawikanon, his superior, to discuss and question the transfer order. During the heated exchange, the suspect lost control and used his firearm to shoot and kill his superior. Forensic teams are currently collecting evidence and witness statements to finalize the case file.
The Kalasin provincial governor has instructed officials to handle the case strictly according to the law and ordered urgent psychological support for the staff inside the provincial hall who witnessed the distressing incident.
The incident has caused significant shock. Investigators will conduct detailed questioning of the suspect to clarify the true motive before proceeding with the highest level of criminal prosecution.
