Update on the case: Lieutenant Colonel Tinakorn Vechakama, 59, clerk of the Muang Kalasin conscription office, shot Colonel Kornwikanon Wongsao-nao, 59, conscription officer of Kalasin province, fatally inside his office at the Kalasin provincial hall at 11:00 a.m. on 17 June 2026, causing alarm among officials and visitors. He surrendered and confessed. The initial cause is believed to be dissatisfaction over being investigated and ordered transferred to another district. Police charged him with premeditated murder, carrying a firearm in public without justification, and firing a weapon in public.
At 11:30 a.m. on 18 June 2026, Pol. Col. Chalit Srihanu, chief of Muang Kalasin Police Station, Pol. Lt. Col. Mangkon Chomchit, deputy chief investigator, and investigators transferred Lieutenant Colonel Tinakorn from the detention room to the investigative team and sent him by vehicle to be detained at the military court in Khon Kaen province for legal proceedings.
Lieutenant Colonel Tinakorn remained calm and silent, and immediately upon leaving the detention room, he respectfully greeted the police officers. When reporters asked if he wished to speak or apologize to the deceased or their family, he remained silent before being taken into the vehicle.
Pol. Col. Chalit Srihanu, chief of Muang Kalasin Police Station, said after questioning the suspect, he confessed to the shooting, citing dissatisfaction over being investigated and transferred related to his duties. After interviewing involved parties and collecting evidence, the suspect will be sent to the military court at the 23rd Military Circle in Khon Kaen for legal action, facing three charges: premeditated murder, carrying a firearm in a town, village, or public place without justification, and firing a gun in public.
Pol. Col. Chalit added that during the suspect's overnight detention, his behavior was normal. Police have assigned guards to monitor him 24 hours a day to prevent self-harm. Meanwhile, the deceased’s body was examined by doctors at Srinagarind Hospital in Khon Kaen. The family took the body to their hometown in Sakon Nakhon province for funeral rites last night.
The family and relatives of Colonel Kornwikanon Wongsao-nao, the deceased conscription officer of Kalasin province, invited monks to perform a ceremony to send the spirit back to the hometown and conduct religious rites in Sakon Nakhon province. They will allow the legal process to proceed accordingly.
