Thai Police Rescue Chinese Man, Victim of Call Center Scam, After Being Defrauded of 10 Million Baht and Held for Ransom

Police forces raided to rescue a Chinese man who was a victim of a call center gang. He was defrauded by criminals impersonating Chinese police who threatened him into transferring about 10 million baht before tricking him into flying to Thailand and staging a ransom demand from his family.

On 29 June 2026, under the direction of Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, Metropolitan Police Chief, Police Major General Charin Kopattan, Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief (Suppression), Police Major General Pallop Aermla, Deputy Metropolitan Police Chief (Investigation and Metropolitan Police Spokesperson), Police Major General Chaikrit Pho-a, Commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6, and Police Colonel Sirichat Chanphromma, Superintendent of Patumwan Police Station, officers from Patumwan Police Station, together with tourist police, immigration officers, investigators, and patrol units, were ordered to rescue a Chinese man who was a victim of a scammer gang staging a ransom demand exceeding 10 million baht.

This followed investigators receiving coordination from a Chinese worker in Thailand, who was informed by Chinese police to help track down the Chinese victim of the call center gang. They found he had traveled to Thailand and was staying at a hotel under the jurisdiction of Patumwan Police Station. Authorities quickly coordinated to check and were able to safely rescue the victim inside his room at about 03:00 on 29 June.

During interrogation, the victim stated that he had been called by criminals impersonating Chinese police officers, accused of being involved in a criminal case, and threatened to transfer money to end the case. He transferred money four times totaling about 2 million yuan, or roughly 10 million baht, while he was in Malaysia.

Afterward, the criminals tricked the victim into traveling to Thailand, claiming they would arrange his return to China, but instead forced him to contact his parents to demand ransom money. This was a staged kidnapping to extort money from his family.

Officers found the victim traveling and staying alone, with no accomplices found in Thailand at this stage. They seized his mobile phone for examination and coordinated for the victim’s father to travel from China to Thailand to pick him up at Patumwan Police Station. Investigations are ongoing to track and prosecute the transnational call center gang involved.
