Australian Police Discuss Cross-Border Drug Trafficking Case with Thai Narcotics Office - Flight Attendant Case

Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers brought a black-covered file to meet the Secretary-General of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to coordinate and exchange information on an international drug trafficking case involving a flight attendant smuggling heroin.

On 1 July 2026 at 14:00, reporters reported that a meeting was held to exchange information between the ONCB, through its Narcotics Suppression Bureau, and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to follow up on developments in the case of Ms. Meena (surname withheld), 26, a female flight attendant with Thai Airways International. She was arrested by Australian authorities at Melbourne Airport, Australia, on 25 June 2026 with 1 kilogram of heroin concealed in her luggage. Currently, Ms. Meena is in Australian custody and is scheduled to appear in Melbourne District Court on 14 September 2026.

During today's discussion, the focus was on expanding investigative progress, including interrogation results about who the final recipient of the package Ms. Meena carried was, and the designated pickup location before her arrest by Australian authorities.

Additionally, the talks included reviewing past criminal cases, particularly noting that Thailand is often a transit point for drugs destined for third countries, with Australia being the most common final destination. They also discussed strengthening security and interception measures for drug import and export between Thailand and Australia.

When the AFP representatives arrived at the office, reporters attempted to ask about the topics to be discussed. The two AFP representatives smiled at the questions but did not respond before proceeding into the building and upstairs to the meeting room, where Pol. Lt. Col. Suriya Singhakamon, Secretary-General of the ONCB, and officials from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau welcomed them.

Reporters observed that the AFP representatives brought a black folder marked “AFP” and were accompanied by a man wearing a jacket labeled “Australian Border Force” (ABF) on the back. The ABF is Australia’s border security agency, combining functions similar to customs, immigration police, and border security into one. Under the Department of Home Affairs, the ABF’s main duties include immigration control by checking travelers’ passports, visas, and entry rights; customs inspections of luggage, goods, and prohibited items such as drugs, weapons, large sums of cash, and illegal merchandise; border enforcement targeting smuggling, human trafficking, and transnational crime networks; and ensuring security at airports, seaports, and border checkpoints. ABF officers commonly operate at international airports including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
