According to reports, the Pha Muang Task Force, through the Chaiyanupap Special Unit, launched an operation to intercept drug trafficking along the Thailand–Myanmar border near the natural route at Nama Eurn village, Mae Sao subdistrict, Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai Province, after receiving intelligence that drugs would be smuggled from the neighboring country into Thailand.

On 25 June, the Chaiyanupap Special Unit deployed forces from Ranger Company 3207 and Cavalry Company 4 in two operational teams to patrol, monitor, and ambush along natural routes to prevent and suppress drug smuggling.

On 2 July, around 14:00, officers spotted a group of about 10–15 drug carriers on foot along a mountainous path. When officers revealed themselves to conduct a search, the traffickers immediately opened fire, triggering a firefight that lasted about five minutes.

After the gunfire ceased, officers secured the area and inspected the scene, finding all officers safe, while 4 suspects from the traffickers were dead. The remaining members used their local knowledge to escape.

Seized items included 11 sacks modified as backpacks containing approximately 1,162,000 methamphetamine pills (Category 1 narcotics), 22 heroin bars weighing about 7.7 kilograms (Category 1 narcotics), 20 bundles of raw opium weighing approximately 32 kilograms (Category 2 narcotics), 3 shotguns, and 1 knife.

On 3 July, Major General Satit Waiyanon, Commander of the Pha Muang Task Force and Director of the Task Force’s Drug Prevention and Suppression Center, assigned Colonel Meechai Nilsart, Deputy Commander of the Pha Muang Task Force, to represent the commander.
