Independent Inquiry Panel Charges Big Joke and Eakwit in 246-Baht Gold Bribe Case

The independent inquiry panel has charged “Big Joke” and Eakwit in connection with a 246-baht gold bribe case involving the NACC, related to efforts to influence a 2024 case. Eakwit declined to answer reporters’ questions, while Surasit, Eakwit's driver and lawyer, confirmed his client denies the charges and will submit a written statement within 15 days.

At 11:00 on 6 July 2026 at the Supreme Court in Sanam Luang, the independent inquiry committee appointed by the Supreme Court President summoned Eakwit Watchawalku, National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) member; Pol. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, former Deputy Police Chief; Sombat Thontham, then NACC subcommittee member and expert; and Surasit Paekerd, Eakwit's personal driver—four people in total—for alleged misconduct in office.

The case involves a bribe where Eakwit accepted 246 baht of gold from Pol. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, former Deputy Police Chief, who was under NACC investigation for profiting from an online gambling website.

Reports state that the independent inquiry panel used a room at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders for the hearing. This room is not a formal courtroom bench. The panel personally questioned the suspects. Upon charge notification and hearing, the accused were called in to explain. The inquiry was confidential with no media disclosure.

At 11:55, Eakwit Watchawalku, NACC member, left the Supreme Court through the front gate facing Sanam Luang. While waiting for his car, reporters shouted questions about the charges and hearing, but Eakwit did not respond, only giving a slight smile.

Amorn Kusol, lawyer for Surasit, said that his client came today to acknowledge charges of jointly supporting an official’s misconduct. Surasit denied the charges and requested to submit a written explanation within 15 days, expected by 21 July. The independent inquiry panel will consider the evidence submitted before deciding whether to press charges. Meanwhile, regarding Surasit’s abduction for interrogation in Surat Thani, a complaint has been filed at the Anti-Corruption Court Region 8, which has accepted the case for investigation.
