Police Expedite Further Interrogations to Investigate Behavior Before Incident in Case of 11-Year-Old Driving Vehicle That Hit Wandering Monks

Mukdahan police have called a meeting to summarize the case of an 11-year-old boy who drove a pickup truck and caused the death of 10 monks. Charges of negligence are being considered against the boy, while his guardians face allegations of neglect.

On 6 July 2026, in the case of an 11-year-old special needs boy who secretly took his father's pickup truck and drove it into a procession of wandering monks, resulting in the death of 10 monks and injuries to 12 others, questions arose about how the boy could drive since the scene was more than 10 kilometers from his home, as previously reported.

Recently, Police Colonel Amnat Hanchana, Deputy Commander of Mukdahan Provincial Police, revealed that a meeting was held today with the investigative team to summarize all evidence, including physical, testimonial, and circumstantial evidence.

Additionally, further witness interrogations are underway. So far, 28 witnesses have been questioned, including the boy's grandparents, caretakers, neighbors, and school teachers, to investigate his behavior before the incident—especially the key issue of how the boy was able to drive the vehicle. Authorities are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage from before the day of the incident as well. The boy and his mother have not yet been interviewed as they are currently in Ubon Ratchathani province.

If the evidence is complete, the boy may face charges for negligent driving causing death and injury, but this depends on medical and psychological evaluations to determine if he is fit to stand trial. Meanwhile, the guardians may be prosecuted for neglect under the Child Protection Act for allowing the child access to the vehicle, which led to the tragic accident.
