Nonthaburi—Two serious charges have been filed against a 31-year-old man who, while drunk, sped his BMW and crashed full force into a tuk-tuk inside a village in Bang Bua Thong, causing three deaths. He was then sent to court with bail opposed by the police.
In the early morning of 20 July 2026, Mr. Yosathon Jongputhisiri, age 31, drove a black BMW with license plate 2 ขฮ 982 Bangkok, intoxicated after watching the World Cup final at a restaurant in Ratchaphruek area. He crashed into a tuk-tuk at the entrance of Soi 12 inside a village in Bang Bua Thong on Bang Kruai-Sai Noi Road, Sonloi Subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi Province. The collision caused the deaths of three people: Ms. Lamai Achmakornlak, 82; Ms. Phat Chae-ngow, 77, both dessert vendors and passengers; and Ms. Prathumporn Prasertkantrong, 37, the tuk-tuk driver, all deceased at the scene.
Police measured Mr. Yosathon’s blood alcohol concentration and found it at 152 milligrams percent, exceeding the legal limit. He was taken into custody for prosecution at Bang Bua Thong Police Station, as previously reported.
Latest updates on 20 July 2026 report that Mr. Rungsak Prasertkantrong, 49, husband of the tuk-tuk driver, said his wife had been driving a tuk-tuk for many years. She routinely picked up the two deceased passengers from their home daily and took them to Bang Bua Thong Market. He described his wife as hardworking, the main support of the family, and well-loved by the community at Bang Bua Thong Market.
Before leaving to drive, his wife told him she would only pick up one regular customer within the village that day and planned to return after dropping the customer off at the market to prepare alms-giving sets to earn extra income for their children's tutoring fees. He did not expect such a tragic event to occur. Their two children, upon hearing the news of their mother's passing, have not stopped crying.
Ms. Priyanan Satjaniran, 55, niece of the two deceased dessert vendor passengers, who came to file a report at the police station, said the deceased were her aunts selling desserts at Bang Bua Thong Market. They were regularly picked up by the deceased tuk-tuk driver at their home around 4 a.m. every day to buy ingredients to make desserts for sale, so they had become acquainted. The family has decided to hold the funeral rites for the two deceased at Bang Phai Temple.
Later at 12:00 p.m., Bang Bua Thong Police took Mr. Yosathon Jongputhisiri, 31, the BMW driver, into custody. He faces two charges: drunk driving causing death and negligent driving causing property damage. He was presented to Nonthaburi Provincial Court around noon, with bail opposed due to the case’s severity and multiple deaths. Throughout his detention at the police station, Mr. Yosathon appeared tense and declined to answer reporters' questions.
