Mae Sai Police Station officers seized 400,000 methamphetamine pills hidden in backpacks abandoned in the roadside grass along the bypass road (the route to the Second Sai River Bridge). They believe drug trafficking agents were waiting for someone to pick up the drugs for transport further into the country's interior.
At approximately 08:00 on 30 July 2026, Mae Sai Police officers in Chiang Rai seized about 400,000 methamphetamine pills concealed in two black backpacks. These were found in roadside grass along the bypass road (the route to the Second Sai River Bridge) in Ban San Phak Hee, Mu 3, Mae Sai Mittraphap Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province.
This seizure followed a report to Police Colonel Jiraphat Saksung, Superintendent of Mae Sai Police Station, from an informant about suspected drug trafficking into the area. He ordered the investigation unit, patrol officers, and staff at the public service booth to intensify surveillance and monitor suspicious individuals closely.
Later, at about 07:40 the same day, local residents reported finding two suspicious black backpacks abandoned in the roadside grass near a billboard. Lieutenant Veerawit Buasantia, Deputy Inspector of Mae Sai Police Station, along with Lieutenant Chumphon Chotisarin, head of the bypass public service booth, led officers to investigate the scene.
Initially, officers set up a stakeout and observed the area from a safe distance for nearly an hour to see if the trafficking group would return to retrieve the items. When no one appeared, they seized the backpacks and brought them to the bypass public service booth for inspection.
Upon inspection, the backpacks contained four large bundles of methamphetamine pills, totaling approximately 400,000 tablets. The officers then formally took the evidence to Mae Sai Police Station for official seizure.
It is initially believed that the drug trafficking group left this batch at the meeting point to await handover to a transport group moving the drugs further into the country's interior. Police are continuing investigations, reviewing nearby CCTV footage to track down and arrest those involved for prosecution under the law.
