At 07:57 on 3 August 2026, reporters said an unknown group of gunmen opened fire behind Lam Mai Police Station in Lam Mai Subdistrict, Mueang Yala District, Yala Province, in an area of rubber plantations and dense forest. Police officers on duty inside the station quickly took strategic positions and returned fire to protect themselves and secure the station. This led to a prolonged firefight before the attackers used their knowledge of the escape routes to withdraw.
Later, Pol. Maj. Gen. Wallop Jamnongasa, Deputy Commissioner of the 9th Regional Police, along with Pol. Maj. Gen. Kong At Suwankham, Commander of Yala Provincial Police, Vimutti Animmani, District Chief of Mueang Yala, Pol. Col. Chatchai Sakdi, Superintendent of Mueang Yala Police Station, and Pol. Col. Khosit Benjakul, Superintendent of Lam Mai Police Station, rushed to the scene. They secured the area until the situation calmed and gunfire ceased. Security forces, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, forensic officers from Yala's 10th Forensic Unit, and Mae Ko Nia Rescue Team sealed off the scene to ensure safety and promptly collected bullet trajectories, spent cartridges, and detailed evidence to aid in the investigation and pursuit of the suspects.
Initial checks confirmed that no police officers or civilians were injured or killed. Security agencies have heightened their security measures, ordering all checkpoints and roadblocks throughout Yala and adjacent areas to intensify inspections of suspicious persons and vehicles. Forces have been mobilized to track down and apprehend the attackers to bring them to justice and prevent recurrence in the area.
Authorities believe the gunmen aimed to create unrest and fear in the area. Security agencies continue to closely monitor the situation and urge the public to report any suspicious persons or activities immediately to help maintain safety in the community.
