On 10 Aug 2026 19:00 GMT+7, at Rattanathibet Police Station in Nonthaburi province, Mr. Chetsada Mosikharat, the Nonthaburi governor, together with Ms. Yaniphat Srikot, the Mueang Nonthaburi district chief, visited to follow up on the case involving Mr. Chalong Riewrang, former Nonthaburi MP, who allegedly shot Police Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert, the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization president, resulting in his death and injury to a driver earlier that morning.
He disclosed that the suspect has now been formally charged following the fatal incident. The police are prosecuting him on four counts: 1. Premeditated murder, 2. Attempted murder, 3. Carrying a firearm in public without lawful reason, and 4. Discharging a firearm in public without lawful reason.
Meanwhile, police have requested a court warrant to search the suspect's residence for firearms, illegal items, and other evidence relevant to the case. The search is underway, and authorities are gathering evidence to proceed with the prosecution promptly. The suspect is scheduled to be brought before the court for detention tomorrow.
Mr. Chetsada stated that evidence includes CCTV footage and the suspect’s partial confession. Initially, the suspect cited personal reasons as the cause. However, police continue to collect all evidence to follow legal procedures and will submit the case file to the prosecutor for further review.
Regarding security measures following the incident at Debsirin School, the Prime Minister has ordered an increase in safety protocols at schools and across the country. The approach includes two parts: enhancing security levels in educational institutions and strictly controlling firearms, especially their presence in public places, schools, and government facilities.
On the issue of the suspect smoking near police officers, Mr. Chetsada explained that the suspect was handled according to standard procedures. During custody, the suspect requested permission to smoke due to accumulated stress. Police confirm the case is handled normally, with handcuffs applied during investigation and detention as per protocol, and no discriminatory treatment occurred.
Mr. Chetsada added that regarding firearms, authorities are considering revoking licenses for several guns if found that, although legally licensed, the owner exhibits inappropriate behavior or other conduct violating the law. Such cases will undergo formal revocation procedures.
Concerning the election for the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization president to fill the vacancy, the process will follow legal provisions. The Election Commission (EC) is currently coordinating with the organization on the election schedule, with details to be announced later.
