Late last night, on 21 Aug 2016, Police Lieutenant Panu Ruj Limsangkat, deputy investigator of Thonglor Police Station, received a report of a man falling into the water inside Benjasiri Park on Sukhumvit Road, Khlong Tan Subdistrict, Khlong Toei District, Bangkok. He coordinated with Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue workers and a diving team to investigate.
Initial witness accounts stated that before the incident, two to three men were involved in a fight near the pond. One man was assaulted until he lost consciousness, after which the assailant threw his body into the pond and fled the scene.
Rescue personnel and divers searched together until they found the unidentified man in the pond. He was shirtless, wearing black denim shorts, and barefoot. He was brought ashore and found to be deceased. No identification documents were found, so his name and nationality remain unknown.
Currently, Thonglor Police are urgently examining CCTV footage and escape routes to track down the suspect and bring them to justice. The cause and details of the incident remain under investigation.
Mr. Witawat Khamhom, a volunteer officer from Ruamkatanyu Foundation at Thonglor Police Station, told reporters that initially, a report came in about a person falling into the water at Benjasiri Park. When officers arrived, witnesses indicated the person had fallen near the edge of the pond. Officers searched with equipment and found the victim towards the middle and near the edge of the pond. They then coordinated with the foundation to send a diving team.
When asked about the cause of the drowning, he said they learned there had been a fight at the edge of the pond, resulting in someone being pushed into the water. Afterward, the park officials reviewed CCTV footage and it appeared to be an assault. The victim was attacked until unconscious, then the assailant threw him into the water and fled alone.
Initially, reports mentioned two to three people in the video, but CCTV showed only one person kicking the victim in the face and then throwing him into the pond. Although two people were involved in the fight, only one attacked and threw the victim into the water. The victim did not resist and lost consciousness, disappearing under the water. The victim’s identity remains unknown as no documents or ID were found on him.
