Somkiat Jaturas, deputy inspector of Sai Mai Police Station, together with Mr. Aekpop Luangprasert, founder of the "Sai Mai Must Survive" page, went to a house in Sai Mai district, Bangkok, following a complaint from Ms. Janphen (surname withheld), 57, a gas station employee who is blind in her right eye. She reported that her 27-year-old son, Poramet, heavily addicted to drugs, regularly demanded money and physically abused her.
While traveling, Ms. Janphen was in the vehicle with the "Sai Mai Must Survive" team when she received a threatening phone call from Poramet, who used harsh language ordering her to return home immediately. Upon arrival at the house, Poramet came out carrying a knife at his waist. The officers quickly subdued him, restrained him on the ground for safety.
Tearfully, Ms. Janphen expressed her despair, saying she contacted the "Sai Mai Must Survive" page for help after her son forced, threatened, and abused her to extort 300 baht daily for drugs. If she had no money, she would be beaten regularly. She earns only 390 baht daily, but her son takes 300 baht for drugs. On days without money, he forces her to borrow from coworkers; if she fails, she is brutally beaten.
Ms. Janphen added that she suffers from glaucoma and intended to save money for treatment, but her son extorted all her money, leaving her unable to afford care. Now she is completely blind in one eye. She sought help from "Sai Mai Must Survive" because she has no money and cannot borrow anymore. She fears further abuse if she cannot pay. She had reported him to the police, who sent him to a rehabilitation facility, but after a few days, he returned and resumed the abuse. He also forced her to submit urine tests to avoid reporting again. Two weeks ago, he slapped her ear hard for asking his friend to get cigarettes from his room. She has contemplated suicide but refrains out of concern for her son. Now with no support left, she seeks police to arrest and rehabilitate him.
Poramet admitted to assaulting his mother, claiming anger over her neglect. Initially, he denied asking for money for drugs, but police found clear evidence during a house search: drug paraphernalia, ecstasy, marijuana scattered in the home, and two sharp rattan sticks. He knelt before his mother and apologized.
Authorities detained Poramet for questioning at the police station and plan to conduct drug tests to support legal action. He faces preliminary charges of assault and drug use. Additional charges, including threats and weapon offenses, await his mother's formal complaints.
