The gunman who killed three people inside a house in Suphan Buri has surrendered to police, claiming the woman was his girlfriend. He said he became angry after seeing her with another man in the house, despite having asked her to stop contacting him. He denied shooting the child, stating the gun accidentally discharged.
The incident involved a gunman who shot and killed 42-year-old Mr. Athiphong, 45-year-old Ms. Thiriyada, and a 6-year-old boy inside a residence in Nong Phak Nak Subdistrict, Sam Chuk District, Suphan Buri Province, during the early hours of 27 Sep 2023 GMT+7.
Later, the wife of Mr. Athiphong, the deceased, arrived at the scene and said she did not know her husband was among those killed in the house. She learned about it only after someone called her. Her husband had been missing for about 3 to 4 days before being found shot dead.
Most recently, Police Colonel Peera Aswapiboonpol, Deputy Commander of Suphan Buri Provincial Police, led a team of investigators from Suphan Buri and Region 7 Police to track down the suspect, starting by reviewing CCTV footage believed to show the suspect's escape route.
At 14:30 on 28 Sep 2023 GMT+7, officers from Region 7 and Suphan Buri police arrested the suspect after a friend arranged for him to surrender at U Thong Police Station. The suspect had been hiding in Huai Krachao Subdistrict, Lao Khwan District, Kanchanaburi Province. The suspect was identified as Mr. Chatchai Klayklang, also known as Nueng, from Huai Krachao, Kanchanaburi.
Initial investigation revealed that Mr. Nueng claimed to be the boyfriend of Ms. Thiriyada, the victim. They had previously argued because he learned she was seeing Mr. Athiphong. He had asked her to end contact, which she agreed to. On the day of the incident, Mr. Nueng said he secretly entered the house and saw Mr. Athiphong with Ms. Thiriyada, which made him angry. He then used a gun he carried to shoot Mr. Athiphong first, followed by Ms. Thiriyada in the bathroom. Regarding the 6-year-old boy, Mr. Nueng claimed the gun discharged accidentally.
Mr. Krisada, 42, a friend who brought the suspect to surrender, said he was contacted by someone and was shocked by the news. He then helped arrange for police contact to facilitate the surrender. He said they do not know the full truth and that the authorities must investigate further. He did not expect his friend to commit such an act.
After preliminary interrogation, police took Mr. Nueng to recover the weapon used as evidence, then brought him for further questioning at Sam Chuk Police Station. He has been charged with intentional homicide and carrying firearms and ammunition in public without permission. Authorities are compiling evidence before submitting him to Suphan Buri Provincial Prison.
