Detention of Achariya on Four Charges He Denies Allegations, Suspects Political Motive

Mr. Achariya was detained and brought before the Criminal Court on four charges. He denies all allegations and believes there is a political directive behind the prosecution. He has not yet considered his response if bail is denied today.

At approximately 09:15 on 5 Oct 2026 GMT+7, police from the Technology Crime Suppression Division escorted Mr. Achariya Ruangrattanapong, chairman of the Crime Victims Assistance Club, from Thung Song Hong Police Station in Laksi District, Bangkok, to the Criminal Court. He faces charges of fraud, violations of the Computer Crime Act, money laundering, and illegal online gambling involving electronic media related to boxing.

During his detention, reporters asked Mr. Achariya about a personal account balance of 191 million baht from 2024–2025 and whether he could explain it. He said he could address all points and denied that victim-donated money was circulated for boxing gambling, calling that "not true." He added, "If I gambled 300–400 million baht on boxing, wouldn’t I rather spend that money on travel?" He acknowledged the possibility of being targeted and said he believes there is a political order behind this, noting his club’s account was closed in 2022 and this information can be verified on the club's Facebook page.

When asked if the donated money was still available, Mr. Achariya responded, "No, that’s not true." He said he would let authorities do their work and had nothing further to add. When asked if he expected bail today, he replied, "I’d rather not think about it yet." Police then escorted him into a police vehicle to go to the Criminal Court immediately. Mr. Achariya showed no signs of distress.

Earlier this morning, Lt. Col. Dr. Thawatchai Kanjanarin, a former surgeon at Phramongkutklao Hospital, visited Mr. Achariya, bringing bottled water and a set of grilled pork skewers. He also distributed more than 20 sets of sticky rice with grilled pork to journalists covering the detention.

Lt. Col. Dr. Thawatchai said he came to offer support today, having missed visiting yesterday. He was aware of criticism regarding his comparison of Mr. Achariya to Nelson Mandela, which some mocked, but he was unbothered. He expressed sympathy for those suffering and happiness for those well. Today, he shared the grilled pork and water with Mr. Achariya, who ate heartily, which made him glad.
